ALF Expectations

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down and share a meal with some smart and savvy operators of several assisted living facilities after the NCALA Trade Show. (By the way, the show was awesome! Thanks NCALA!)

During that meal, a very smart nurse said the following: (I’m paraphrasing here.)

Changes that you might expect to take a generation are happening right now. Children of the elderly often make decisions on their parents’ behalf. Those children often have high expectations.

I found this to be very insightful. Mom and Dad may not have high expectations around the amenities offered by an assisted living facility, but their children may very well. A lot has changed in a generation. Universities now cater to students using amazing facilities that sometimes rival casinos. Some tech companies offer on-site catering, dry cleaning and at-desk massages for employees. If the grown children of your potential customer is making the decisions, those high expectations may very well carry over to your facility.

You may think that observation is well, obvious. But how many assisted living facilities have on-site therapists? Doesn’t that seem like an obvious, basic amenity that can actually lead to higher quality of life?
