The purpose of this program is to identify residents with wounds who may benefit from alternative therapy approaches to assist in the management of wounds. Nonhealing wounds can lead to further complications such as systemic infections, sepsis, gangrene, nerve damage, organ damage, loss of function in the area of the wound, or even an amputation. Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapists provide an interdisciplinary approach to treatment, assist in preventing the development of wounds and maintaining skin integrity, assist in healing current wounds, and educate staff on risk factors, skin care, positioning, and proper nutrition to aid wound healing. Additionally, the therapists can serve as part of the IDT team to identify root causes of wounds and make recommendations for overall resident safety.
