The purpose of this program is to educate on the anatomy and physiology of the swallow in order to understand methods for assessing oral prep, oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal functions. Sensory breakdowns and the identification of cognitive and language impairments are analyzed with considerations of these factors impacting mealtime success. Common feeding and swallowing problems are reviewed with a comprehensive overview of clinical solutions and implementation techniques to improve resident dysphagia management outcomes. To promote success following skilled care, an interdisciplinary approach honoring resident choice through the utilization of risk/benefit analysis is reviewed and discussed.
